Recognizing Excellence in the Osteopathic Medicine Profession

SCOMS is committed to recognizing excellence in the osteopathic medicine profession by honoring deserving individuals. Below are details for each category honoring physicians, residents, and medical students.  Nomination forms will be accepted beginning on March 18, 2024 and the deadline to submit nominations is April 1, 2024. The winners will be recognized at the SCOMS Annual Meeting June 6, 2024.

 Physician of the Year Award 

  • Must currently be practicing osteopathic medicine in South Carolina and a current member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society
  • Demonstrates unwavering dedication toward patients, has made a significant impact in direct patient care and whose actions embody the values of the profession through leadership and service to the public and the profession
  • This individual consistently achieves high standards in the practice of medicine and is looked upon as a role model by his or her peers
  • Nominees are required to complete the Nominee Form and submit a current CV/Resume, a brief paragraph outlining a personal statement, and at least one letter of support

 Resident of the Year Award 

  • Must currently be an osteopathic medicine resident in South Carolina and a current member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society
  • Demonstrates commitment to osteopathic patient-centered care, provides exemplary patient care and clinical promise, contributes to scholarly activity, and demonstrates leadership and a commitment to the community
  • Nominees are required to complete the Nominee Form and submit a current CV/Resume, a brief paragraph outlining a personal statement, and at least one letter of support

 Student DO of the Year Award 

  • Must be currently enrolled in an osteopathic medical school in South Carolina and must have a GPA >3.0 and be in good academic standing
  • Must be a current member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society
  • Must exemplifies what it means to be an osteopathic physician and who shows compassion, leadership, and enthusiasm for medicine
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to philanthropic and community service
  • Nominees are required to complete the Nominee Form and submit a current CV/Resume, a brief paragraph outlining a personal statement, and at least one letter of support
$1,000 SCOMS Student Scholarship
  • Must be currently enrolled in an osteopathic medical school in South Carolina and must have a GPA >3.0 and be in good academic standing
  • Must be a current member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society
  • Completed at least 50 hours of volunteer work/community service in the last three years
  • Plans to practice medicine in South Carolina upon completion of training
  • The candidate should have no history of serving on the SCOMS board in any capacity, either past or present
  • Nominees are required to complete the Nominee Form and submit a Personal Statement that highlights their service and explains why they want to return to South Carolina to practice, and at least one letter of support
